I Let it Ring

I'd always send a message
Each with different words
Never quite the same
Yet they all meant one thing

Talk to me
I don't want to be alone
I need someone to be there

At first I'd hold it
Waiting just
Moments for it to ring
And it would vibrate in my palm

Time went by summer
Past, you had things to do
I still filled the screen with letters
Words that weren't always the ones I wanted

Talk to me
I don't want to be alone
I want someone to be there

You were busy
and sometimes It took a while
but it would buzz along my back
making my spine tingle

The clock kept ticking
school work came and went
projects to be done
I made short messages more to the point

Talk to me
I don't want to be alone
I want someone to be there

But not in those words
simple things to make you laugh
but laughing never led to a reply
and the phone on the table never rang

I sat watching, waiting for
the message light reflections
made me reach for it, flip it open
but decide not to text

Talk to me
I don't want to be alone
I would like it if someone was there

No answers to questions
I didn't feel I should ask
not even to the ones that I
had sent you

And then my phone began to ring
It wasn't you but someone else
they asked how I was and said hi
but I knew what they meant

Talk to me
I don't want to be alone
I need someone to be there

And I watched it ring
That foreign object that I had once
Known so well, I could see it across the room
but I didn't reply
