Irony and His Band of Acquaintances

Irony only affects me
Simply because I take part in the activity
On my own time, in my own haven
But when I witness the bringer of my life
Partake in such things as I
Shame stares me down, leaving only guilt to hold my hand

Disappointment and disgrace are involved in this band
Pride and love are simply fair-weathered friends
Coming and going while declining to make amends
With hard work and no play, happiness and joy decay

Stress and pessimism are all that's left
Which always leaves one haggard and unkempt
Thoughts battle emotions yet neither come close to the finish line
The perception of the aforementioned is left behind
To rot amongst the buried emotions that have lost their meaning

Is it hypocritical or is it pathetic?
To engage in a temporary escape seen sometimes as a relic
This war came about through this one activity
How it causes such a stir is still a mystery to me

To use, to be reprimanded, then to suddenly have to become accustomed to the new-found hobby of the one fatigued...
Another blow to the stomach from an old acquaintance, Irony
