The Mirror of My Past

It was a harmless day
Or so I thought
I was smiling, dancing, and running free
With worries far away

I put my earphones in
And tuned into an old favorite song
I happily closed my eyes,
And listened to the powerful melody
But suddenly, my heart lurched
And I opened my eyes to see horrors all around me

There sat a girl,
Whose pale face stained with tears
And wrists stained with regret
She sat on the floor all alone
With only bottles of pills and booze at her side

My heart pounded fast as I realized what was going on
I was staring into the mirror of my past

I ran over to the girl,
My darling fragile old self
And held her as tight as I could
I whispered her words of hope
That at the time I so longed to hear

She cried at the reflection of herself
And asked through tears and blood
If this nightmare was real
I sobbed and nodded
But I promised it wouldn’t last forever

I tried to help her off the floor
But she just slipped and fell again
Everything I told myself
Just ended up making it worse
For this poor girl was no fool
And knew better than to have such hope

The monster appeared by her side,
And yanked her farther away from me
I tried to grab her hand
But he got to her first

I screamed and cried and fought to grab her
But she was too far gone to hear me
