real

did you know that i was once a princess?
royalty, with a gown and a crown and a prince and a lover.
i was always happy and always right;
always perfect, always a sight.
never doubted because my word was more solid,
more golden than the rings on my fingers;
more lively than the bells on my shoes.
you never could have hurt me then
because the thirteen guards outside my door
would have penetrated your body with their swords
and you would have writhed in pain,
begging for mercy and i would have laughed
until i cried, until i died, until you died and your mother cried.
and to her i never would have apologized like you never
apologized to my mother for the indecency you did me.
it would have been perfect, because i was a princess
and you were dead and no one knew you and
everyone, everyone, loved me and to them i never
was unclean; to them i was always pure.
