Innocence
I miss the age of innocenceWhen we were all the same
And no one cared if you were
Sad or happy or angry or mean
Or unnoticed
When freckles were considered cute
Not unsightly
And your hair didn’t have to
Have a different style everyday
To make you cool
No one knew what swears really meant
And no one ever cared
When recess was actually used
To play games
Instead of sitting around talking about
Each other like our lives depend on
Seeing another girl cry
When we wore clothes
Because they fit
Not because they decide
Who you’re going to be
A pair of jeans wouldn’t
Change our lives
And neither would a boy
I miss when boys had cooties
And I miss when everyone got along
I miss when nothing could faze us
And I miss when no one cared about politics
I miss when saying H-E-DOUBLE HOCKEY STICKS was unholy
And I miss telling your friends everything
I miss the age of innocence.
