Midnight runner
The cool crisp air bites at her face and arms as she runs. The only sounds heard is her stressed but steady breaths and a gentle rhythmic beat of her feet along the smooth pavement. She is not running away from something. She never runs towards something. She runs to be free. As she runs down a familiar path way, a young boy darts out of the housing side and runs at her side. After a few strides, they become as one...one heartbeat, one breath, one set of legs stomping on the ground pushing them onwards. They match each other on everything. They never speak, but know exactly where the other is going. The sky cloudy of the days rain wish to take another shot at them with there icy water and hushed winds...to one side of the sky, an amber-pink color as the sun sets, to the other, a deep navy blue were midnight threatens to take all. At a small corner the boy turns to the right, the girl following wordlessly in his wake. Across a dark meadow, the dew soaking there socks and hushing there steps. As they run, they near their end and start to slow. As they round another corner, the girl starts to sprint to a driveway, the gravel crunching under her steps. As she feels alone she turns and looks back. 50 yards away, standing in the middle of the road, at a time when even the owls are asleep, the young boy stares at the sky. The moon glistening in a small opening that just cleared. the howl of a dog is heard in the distance and a flutter of birds break the silence. As the flapping of there wings fades away..the boy turns around and holds out his arms. The girl looks at her house, and whispers so softly "tomorrow I will return." On that she runs towards the boy, embraces him and gives him a kiss, then they both turn as one and run off into the midnight darkness.``
